Dining in BrentwoodDotted throughout the neighborhood are old fashioned burger joints, taco stands, and bars, some of which, including Kenneth Threadgill’s original restaurant, date back to the 1930s. In fact, it was at Threadgill’s that a UT student named Janis Joplin was first recorded, and where she first began to develop into a musical legend. That’s just one of the stories from one of the local businesses that add so much to Brentwood, and which give it a unique flavor that attracts so many people looking for their piece of the Austin dream. Since part of the commute is on I-35 the trip could take half an hour or more depending on traffic. If you’ve ever wondered how a cotton farm helped launch Janis Joplin’s career, you can find the answer in a gem of a North-Central Austin neighborhood named Brentwood. In 1951, the city annexed a cotton farm adjacent to the new Brentwood Elementary School, and built a park on part of the land. The rest became a neighborhood that today enjoys an eclectic and busy mix of residents, although brimming more and more with the energy of young families, high-tech professionals, and students attracted to the relative proximity of the University. Most of Brentwood’s households are single-family homes, although there are some good-sized apartment and condominium complexes on the major streets, primarily Lamar and Koenig. In recent years, developers have razed a few of the small cottages that predominate the real estate landscape here and in the Violet Crown area toward Koenig, replacing these homes with more modern-styled homes and duplexes. Slightly newer and larger homes are found in the adjoining Crestview neighborhood along Brentwood’s northern border, as well as in Allandale to the immediate west. |
